FAQ: Do Fortune Auto Coilovers Come Preloaded? If not, how is Preload set?
FAQ: Do Fortune Auto Coilovers Come Preloaded? If not, how is Preload set?
No. Fortune Auto Coilovers do NOT come preloaded from our facility.
We choose this to decrease any risk of damage to the Coilovers while in transit. Included with all Fortune Auto Coilovers is a set of instructions including preload information. Before installing your Coilovers, you’ll need these tools to set your preload: 5mm Allen Key, Spanner Wrenches (included with all Fortune Auto Coilovers), and a measuring tape. When measuring the preload, make sure you take measurements from the top of the spring to the bottom of the spring. Preload recommendations for MacPherson vehicles is different than that of a Double Wishbone vehicle. For MacPherson vehicles, we recommend 1/4” (0.25”) of preload. For Double Wishbone vehicles, you’ll only need to preload 1/8” (0.125”).
Too much preload can result in a bouncy ride quality and poor performance and not enough preload can result in unwanted suspension noise and feel. Take a look at the video to see exactly how we recommend setting preload on your Fortune Auto Coilovers.
FAQ: Divorced Rear and True Coilover Rear Suspension Configurations; What’s the difference?
FAQ: Divorced Rear and True Coilover Rear Suspension Configurations; What’s the difference?
Many vehicles come with a separate spring and shock configuration (Divorced Rear) from the manufacturer. The ride height on Divorced Rear setups is adjusted with the spring perch and the shock then must be adjusted to match to avoid creating too much tension on either shock or spring. Installing and setting up a Divorced Rear suspension is a little more involved than a traditional True Rear Coilover. Take a look at the video here as we outline all the dos and don’ts of installing a Divorced Rear Coilover Kit.
For some vehicles that are designed with a Divorced Rear suspension, we offer True Rear Coilover substitutes but, not for all vehicles. If you want to know if your Divorced Rear setup vehicle has a True Rear option, please click over to our Application List or our Online Shop to check. You can also give us a call or email us to speak with one of our Chassis Specialists.

DIY: Disassemble & Reassemble Your Own Coilovers
DIY: Disassemble & Reassemble Your Own Coilovers
Just like all moving and working parts on a vehicle, your Coilovers need to be serviced after a while. Depending on the model, service intervals vary. For dedicated daily driving and street use, your Coilovers need to be serviced every 60,000 miles or so. If the car sees any regular track time, it’s recommended that you have your set serviced every 15-30,000 miles. If you have a dedicated track car with any of our Motorsports Shocks, it’s in your best interest as well as the car’s to have your shocks serviced every 1,000 miles.
Now, if you need to replace a damper insert or decide youw ant to change your shocks out yourself, not only do we sell individual shock bodies and other components, we also decided to give you a little cheat sheet on how to do it! It doesn’t require an entire race shop or state of the art facility like Fortune Auto to disassemble and reassemble your Coilovers. You do, however, need to have the following: a clean work area with some room to lay things out in order, 2mm and 5mm Allen Keys, Spanner Wrenches that are included with every set of Fortune Auto Coilovers, an electric impact driver, and 17mm or 21mm sockets depending on the application. Once you have your work area set up with the tools required, fire this video up and get to work! We’re always available during normal business hours to help with any issues you might have!
